If you are considering transferring to another Australian institution, you must be aware that if you apply for a visa, you will be unable to change institutions. Accommodation
About Accommodation
Before you get into the nitty gritty about your university-specific accommodation options, it’s important to review the basics of securing long-term accommodation in Australia, which is often the number one predeparture priority of OzTREKK students. If you aren’t living on campus or pre-arranging accommodation before you leave Canada, we highly recommend that you understand how renting a property in Oz works, so you’ll be prepared to hunt for a place to live when you arrive. There are many benefits in arranging housing after you arrive. You can
- physically inspect the property before accepting the terms and conditions of the lease;
- decide whether you will be comfortable in your new neighbourhood;
- assess the noise levels, both by day and night. Remember, you need to be able to sleep and study in your new home;
- check whether it is well-lit at night.
This process still requires preparation. Consider the following when thinking about accommodation:
- Ensure you have temporary accommodation arranged.
- Be prepared financially for the time you may need to spend in temporary accommodation.
- Make housing your first priority.
- Avoid rushing your house hunting. Feeling rushed can hinder your ability to make wise choices.
- Be informed. Before you arrive, read as much as you can about the various housing options and how to arrange them. Then you can get straight into house hunting after you arrive, rather than trying to figure out where to go and what to do.
Things to consider when comparing options
- Location – Take a look at Google Maps when comparing accommodation options!
- Amenities – Kitchen, meal plan, gym, A/C, etc.
- Cost/price range – This will be dependent on the location and amenities, typically the closer to campus and the most amenities offered the higher the price.

Private Rentals
This is the most popular option for students from Canada studying at Australian universities. Apartments are also referred to as “flats” by Aussies. If you plan to live in off-campus rental accommodation, we recommend that you do not sign any agreement before you come to Australia and have seen the property for yourself.
The majority of Flinders students live in suburbs along the major transport corridors of South Road, Fiveash Drive, Goodwood Road, and Sturt Road.
Flinders Private Accommodation Database
The accommodation database has been designed to assist students in their search for housing. To attract as many listings as possible the database is provided free-of-charge to any person who would like to list available housing. This database lists private housing options submitted by students, members of the wider university community and the general public. It includes listings for rentals, shared accommodation and board arrangements.
Access the private accommodation database and learn more about living off campus (at the bottom of the page).

The Burbs
One of the key components of your research will be to get a feel for the city/town in which you will reside. Public transportation options are key to understanding where you could live based on where your university is located and which bus/train/tram/ ferry travels to and from campus. Spend some time reviewing the city maps, become familiar with potential suburbs in which you could reside, and visit Australian public transportation sites.
Some students choose to buy a car, which broadens their options. The beachside suburbs of Brighton and Glenelg are popular. Suburbs between Bedford Park and Victoria Square campus are Mile End, Plympton, Cumberland Park, Goodwood and Camden Park.
City accommodation is often on a direct bus route to the Bedford Park campus.
Suburbs close to Flinders University, Bedford Park campus and accessible by public transport:
- Bedford Park

- Edwardstown
- Melrose Park
- St Marys
- Mitchell Park

Adelaide Metro Card
You need to get around town, right? For public transportation, make sure you get a Concession Card (for students). You might need to get your Flinders Card first to prove that you’re a student. From there you can top up with a few options, such as 14 days or 28 days.

What Students Say
Reviews from 2023 Intake
Speech pathology student
Private rental, Plympton Park (Adelaide) $200/week. I love the area I live in. It is easy to access public transportation and a reasonable distance to the uni (about 45 minutes). Also an easy 25 minute tram ride into the CBD and a 10 minute tram ride to the beach (popular Glenelg suburb). It is further from campus than other locations but I think that the pros outweigh this. Plan ahead!!! Student accommodation options can be quite expensive, but are easier to get into. Share houses can be tough to find and you will want to consider many factors before committing to a place. Arranged before arrival.
Medical student
Private rental, Blackwood at $300 per week. I live in a beautiful house 15 minutes from campus. I found it on flatmates.com which is a great webs tire in Australia to find shared housing. I rent a room in this house and there is 3 other roommates, all friendly and kind. It is really great. I like how much nature there is. I wish it was a bit closer to the beach! Took less than one week to find. Use flatmates.com if you are looking to live in a house with other people. Lots of options.
Medical student
The Village (Flinders Living) $250 (going up to $275 in 2024). 5 minute walk away from the medical centre, free on campus gym access. Would recommend for first year (while adjusting to life in Australia). Right on campus! Easy to bus to the mall – hard to get around other places without a car. Arranged before arrival. Lots of student accommodations in downtown as well!
Audiology student
Adelaide CBD, The Rowlands Place. $650 [get] someone to share costs. Central to public transport, and city life is great. Start searching early. Arranged before arrival.
Medical student
Private rental,$260 Bedford Park. Not close to many places to purchase groceries and other necessities. Definitely plan where you want to be around. T00k 3+ weeks to find.
Medical student
On-campus at Bedford Park. $450/week. Very convenient. Close to campus, lots of other students live here too. Don’t choose to live with friends or other medical students right away.
Medical student
Seaview Downs $300/week. Close to uni and to beach. I found mine through Facebook. Arranged before arrival.
Medical student
Private rental, Black Forest $190 a week. Arranged before arrival. Close to public transit but an old house. It’s in between the city and university campus so you have access to both areas. However it is not a very walkable area, hard to get around without a car. Try to find something that is located close to campus or close to public transit if you aren’t getting a car. Try to find a place with reasonable rent since cost of living in Australia can be pretty high. If you are living with housemates make sure that everyone’s following house rules.
Speech pathology student
Student housing, The Switch $450 per week. Good building, very expensive. Convenient to stores, restaurants, public transport. Adelaide is a car city and it’s really hard to live in Adelaide without a car if you don’t live right in the city (ie downtown). Arranged before arrival.
Physiotherapy student
Private. Seacliff $200/week. Great neighbourhood, close to campus and beach. Close to school through a quick 15 minute bus. Go to as many showing as you can, have proof if funds ready for your applications since you won’t have any income. Took 2 – 3 weeks to find.
Physiotherapy student
Student housing, The Switch $480. It is expensive and a hard pill to swallow when paying such a large amount of rent every month but it is safe, clean, and central. Central, close to transport, close to restaurants, free tram to market and rink. Budget budget budget! Arranged before arrival.

Private rental market in Brighton $230 per week. Took about 1-2 weeks to find. Like: close to campus. Overall, it’s hard to be social without a car in Adelaide.
Basic Accommodation Advice from Flinders
Unless you have secured accommodation at University Hall or in the Deirdre Jordan Village through Flinders Living you will need to consider arranging temporary accommodation by booking a hotel or hostel room or a holiday apartment. New students will be required to book their own temporary accommodation.
International Student Services offers a free accommodation service leading up to the beginning of the semester to assist you with the search for permanent accommodation.
Our strong recommendation is to travel to the property by public transport so you can be sure it is convenient for you to travel between your university campus and your accommodation. Use the Adelaide Metro website trip planner to work out if the rental property is on a good bus route to Flinders.
If you are considering living off campus in rental accommodation please take the time to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations concerning rental agreements as covered by South Australian legislation.
View Adelaide accommodation websites to assist you in researching the current rental market.
Airport Pick-ups
Airport pick-up services may be running under additional restrictions. Please check with providers before booking.
About Airport Pick-ups
To make your start in Adelaide as easy as possible, International Student Services offers a free meet and greet service for new international students. Please make full use of this service, especially if you have not travelled to Australia before and have no friends or family in Adelaide. This is the best way to avoid stress upon arrival!
A member of our arrival team will meet you at Adelaide Airport, at the railway station or at the Central Bus Station and take you to your temporary or permanent accommodation. This service is also free for accompanying family members.
All you need to do to is book the free meet-and-greet service. This service is only available if your booking is received at least five days before you arrive.
